The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men…

Last night about 8 pm I was diligently covering the green beans, tomatoes, and zucchini in the garden. A frost warning was out. To help protect the corn I even set-up one of our irrigation sprinklers to turn on at 4:30 am. I got up when the alarm went off at 4:30 and the thermometer said 40º. Now I know it is off a little, but I thought I could wait until 5:30 to turn on the sprinkler. At 5:30 I put on a jacket and went out and turned the sprinkler on.

When it was finally light I discovered that the sprinkler was not covering the corn. It was doing a half-circle that only over-lapped the corn slightly. The corn now has very sad looking leaves. I am hoping the ears will continue to ripen. The frost even went through some of the blankets, towels, and tarps. It must have been down in the 20ºs. It was a very sad, cold morning in the garden.
