As early as 1973 people were being warned that new tomato varieties were lower in acid content. This has to be taken into account when canning and compensated with lemon juice. The amount of lemon juice recommended to add is now three times what it was then. We are losing our nutrients via hybrids, gentically modifying our produce, and pushing to a quicker maturity.
Questions to ask about genetically modified seed, which is being pushed onto farmers by big business:
1. Does gentically modifying the seed affect the way and how and what our bodies can use?
A pharm corn that was 1/2 of 1% of the US corn in the United States caused a massive disruption of the corn harvest a few years ago. Scientists believed it could trigger severe allergy reactions.
2. Does genetically modifying the seed build a healthier environment? Are more or less pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers needed?
More is being used with the case of RR Soy (Roundup Resistant). Because the crop is resistant to the herbicide, the crop is sprayed heavily. Giant GE Canola has become a weed problem in Canada.
Thankfully RR Wheat is not going to be allowed in the US. It is estimated that 7 out of 10 items in your grocery store have GMO/GE ingredients. And you have no way of knowing if this is true. Check out the title link of truefoodnow site for a list of grocery products they have identified without GMO/GE ingredients, the story of RR Wheat, and how Big Business is pushing GMO/GE seeds on even unsuspecting third-world nations.
