Chapter 10: Servanthood: Whose Slave Do You Think I Am?
Slave, what is a slave? Someone who serves? Someone who has no choice but to serve? Someone who is owned by someone else?
John McArthur just did an interesting sermon on being a slave. As he pointed out, people in the Roman Empire knew what being a slave meant. There were hundreds of thousands of slaves in the Roman Empire. Were they offended by being told their were slaves of sin and became slaves of righteousness? The word “slave” in the New Testament has been translated “servant” in most of the English versions most of the time. It seems our translators were offended by being called a slave.
We call it addiction when someone is a slave to something. They are in bondage to something in their life something else controls them. With Christ we are no longer slaves to things, to passions, to sin. He frees us to become a slave to righteousness, to Him. We willing serve Him by serving those He has placed us under, our authorities.
By living by His design, we demonstrate Christ and His faithfulness to all around us.
