Chapter 7: The Search for a “Stepford” Husband
My Mr. Wonderful would never make it as a Mr. Mom or “Stepford” Husband. I was not feeling well yesterday, my head felt like it would explode and my stomach was nauseous. I had started the laundry and even cooked the chicken for dinner first thing in the morning. Finally about 11:00 a.m., I called my dear husband at work and asked if he was having a slow day and could come home on the early bus. Knowing he had “vacation hours” he needed to use before the end of April or he would lose them, I thought he might be able to. He did come home and I was able to sleep and break the worst of the headache by dinnertime.
Our sons weren’t home so I asked my husband to fix mashed potatoes for dinner. He has often done the “mashing” for me, but he needed directions on how to cook them. We had a good dinner of “Chicken Burgers” (shredded stewed chicken with barbeque sauce on a hamburger bun), mashed potatoes, peas, and pears. It always surprises me how much he doesn’t know about running our home: how to run the washing machine, use the timer on the stove, cook potatoes. He doesn’t need to know those things. He trusts I will take care of those areas. By the way he is not totally inept in the kitchen; he makes better quesadillas and cinnamon toast than me.
In our home I plan, shop for, and fix the meals and my dear husband earns the money to buy the food and seeds. He helps me by rototilling the garden to grow the veggies. And he and our sons hunt for the majority of our meat. I help them with the butchering and wrapping of the meat.
Every home is going to look a little different. I know men who love to cook. One husband I know has his family pick something for him to fix each week. It is usually some gourmet-grilled menu. The key is to be the wife your husband needs for him to be the man God designed him to be.
