Grateful for Mom's Teaching of Practical Skills

In Sunday School class yesterday we were asked, “How we were preparing our children to leave? How our parents prepared us to leave?" Sitting next to me was an older woman who admitted that when she married, she didn’t even know how to boil water! I’ve had other women tell me they don’t know how to sew on a button, they’d never fixed an entire meal before marriage, they knew how to clean, but had no idea how to manage all the different facets of their home to keep it running smoothly.

My mom made sure I had cooking and sewing skills. She also required me to learn to do laundry, clean the bathroom, run the vacuum, dust, mop, scrub the floor, iron, know how to care for a babies and children, drive a car, and grocery shop. She encouraged learning more in any of these areas where I showed an interest. As a result, when I was in college I was able to do my share of keeping the dorm clean. When I married I was equipped with the basic knowledge and skills I needed to manage my home. Thanks Mom.
