Houseplants are not my strong point. But I do enjoy having something green and flowering in the house during the winter. We have a “Christmas” cactus someone gave us as a housewarming gift. It bloomed the first fall after we received it and hasn’t bloomed since. I also have two amaryllis plants that bloomed at Christmas I am trying to keep alive for next year.
I began adding a little whey, from making yogurt cheese, to the watering water. All the plants are looking healthier and have become a darker green. The “Christmas” cactus increased leaf production.
After reading Steve Solomon’s book, Gardening When It Counts, I started saving our coffee grounds to use in the garden this spring. Well, if they help the garden maybe they would help the “Christmas” cactus. I sprinkled a little used coffee grounds around the “Christmas” cactus and it is starting to put on a bloom! Maybe it is an “Easter” cactus.
