For the last several years I’ve been reading through the Bible with a different schedule. Instead of reading the Bible through in a year, I read three chapters each weekday with Proverbs and Psalms on the weekend. I alternate Old Testament and New Testament day about. This gets me through the New Testament in less than a year. But it takes me more than a year to get through the Old Testament. I started this schedule because I felt I needed to learn the principles in the New Testament. Being familiar with the Bible stories was not enough, I needed to know the truths presented. As I read I write down at least one truth I have gleaned for each chapter.
The amount I read in Proverbs and Psalms depends on how much time I have that particular day. Weekends seem to vary greatly. With two sons and husband around on the weekend I find my time is not my own.
My Bible time when our sons were young was usually during our afternoon naptime–when everyone was required to be quiet. When they were old enough to clean-up breakfast, I was able to read my Bible then. Now, two years after graduating the youngest from “home schooling.” I’m able to spend more time in prayer and reading.
My Bible reading time looks like this:
•Exercise –stretches & sit-ups–I find it helps make me more alert and keeps my aging joints from aching.
•Prayer
•Jog with memory work–I find by putting what I want to memorize on small cards on a ring. I can jog/run in the house.
•Bible Reading
