Needing to reduce the fabric scrap pile and re-place some very worn placemats, I used three fabrics to create an assortment of 6 placemats. The beigey with navy flower fabric is the back on all six.
This pattern starts with a basic 9-Patch. Base the size of your patches on the finished size you desire.
Then you cut through the center of the assembled 9-Patch block, both horizontally and vertically. Switch two of the cut pieces that are diagonal to each other.
I made the one above with two fabrics. It is also fun to do in three fabrics with the third fabric being the center piece of the original 9-Patch block.
